Jason Eugene Braswell dies 2 weeks after Caldwell jail suicide attempt
Jason Eugene Braswell of Lenoir, who had been on life support since hanging himself with a bedsheet Jan. 19 in the Caldwell County Jail, died Sunday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Braswell, 34, was arrested Jan. 16, along with Jennifer Gilbert Watson, and charged with several felonies, including possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor larceny and numerous drug charges. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said Braswell tied a sheet around his neck between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday and asphyxiated himself. After he was found slumped in his cell, jail staff began CPR and called 911. Braswell was taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital and then to Carolinas Medical Center.
Braswell's family maintains that he had expressed suicidal thoughts and should have been more closely monitored. The sheriff's office denies that jailers had any indication Braswell would try to kill himself.
