South runs to conference championship
News-Topic Sports Staff South Caldwell has the best girls' cross country team in the Northwestern 4-A Conference. The Lady Spartans put four runners in the top seven and beat Watauga by 20 points Wednesday in the NW 4-A Conference championship at Freedom Park. Tara Wilson won the individual conference title with a time of 19 minutes, 55 seconds over the five-kilometer race. Wilson dusted the field, topping second-place finisher Terra Jackson by more than 30 seconds. Katelin Cooke was third for the Lady Spartans in 20:43, and Miranda Annas was fifth in 20:56. Kristin Queen placed seventh in 21:43, and Tiffany Foster rounded out the Lady Spartan scoring with her time of 22:44, good enough for 16th place. Freedom was third with 78 points, followed by A.C. Reynolds (84), McDowell (132), Alexander Central (169) and East Burke (186). Spartan Christian Webb easily outdistanced the field to win the boys' conference title with his time of 16:23. Watauga's Luke Nelson was second, 36 seconds behind Webb, and Ryan Stultz was third in 17:11. Watauga won the boys' title with 36 points. Freedom was second with 65, followed by South Caldwell (83), A.C. Reynolds (86), East Burke (116), McDowell (127) and Alexander Central (195). Aaron Bentley was 24th for the Spartans in 18:52, and Mason Holman was 28th in 19:09. Scott Sims capped the Spartans scoring with his 31st-place finish in 19:16. Soccer Hibriten solidified its playoff positioning with a 3-0 home win against Bandys Wednesday. Sven Picton, Kyle Teeters and David Williams all netted goals for the Panthers. Hibriten outshot the Trojans by a 31-5 margin. Jon Easton was in goal for the Panthers, who travel to Bunker Hill Monday. College golf The Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute golf team shared a win with Louisburg College at Cardinal Country Club in Selma. The Cobras and Louisburg each finished with four-player scores of 340. Cobra Jack Taylor was the low man of the day with a 74, seven shots ahead of the runner-up. Middle school soccer Hudson moved to the finals of the Northwest Middle School Conference soccer tournament with a 5-3 home win against West Alexander Wednesday. Axle Guerra and Kyle Eagle each scored twice for the Hornets. Chase Everett notched Hudson's other goal. The Hornets will face William Lenoir Middle School in today's tournament finals at 4 p.m. in Lenoir. WLMS nets win William Lenoir advanced to the finals of the Northwest Middle School Conference soccer tournament by beating East Alexander 5-1. Sean Moretz netted two goals for the Wildcats, and Bobby Caudle, Alexander Corralez and Sarah Gibbons also found the back of the net. Nixon Lainez, Chris Franzen, Josh McMenemy and Dillon Smart all finished with assists for the unbeaten Wildcats. William Lenoir will host Hudson today in the tournament finals at 4 p.m. Middle school softball Hudson made its way to the Northwest Middle School Conference softball finals on the arm of Chastan Hall. Against West Alexander Wednesday, Hall tossed a no-hitter as the Hornets earned a 3-0 win. Hudson faces East Alexander today at 5 p.m. at Central Park in Alexander County. Leah Ekard and Brooke Taylor each had two hits for Hudson, and Mattison Hall and Stacey Garland each drove home runs. Middle school football Hudson improved to 4-2 and 3-1 in league play with a 14-6 win against West Alexander. Brandon Ervin finished with 143 rushing yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Mack Dickson added an interception that sealed the Hornet win. Hudson hosts Granite Falls Wednesday.
