South tops West in rematch on the court
By News-Topic Sports StaffSouth Caldwell captured its second tennis victory over West Caldwell in a week Wednesday, downing the Warriors 9-0 in Gamewell. The Spartans dropped just five games in sweeping the six singles matches in straight sets. Bradley Bassinger, Alex Shell, Puan Churkitra, James Barnwell, Chase Hodges and Steph White all claimed singles victories for the Spartans. Churkitra, Barnwell, Hodges and White did not drop a game in their wins. Bassinger and White teamed for a doubles victory as did Barnwell and Hodges. South's brother duo of David and Brian Hendel also emerged victorious for the Spartans. “Our guys played well,” South coach Marc Kirkpatrick said. “They played as well as I thought they were capable of playing today.” With the win, South completed a season sweep of its county rivals West and Hibriten. The Spartans now stand 6-2 overall and are 2-2 in Northwestern Conference matches play heading into today's 4 p.m. home contest against A.C. Reynolds. Soccer The Hibriten girls soccer team played Maiden in a make-up game Wednesday night that resulted in a 12-0 shut out. Leading the Panthers in scoring was Holli Schwartz, who got the ball in the net four times, and assisted on two other goals. Following Schwartz was Emily Carter and Morgan Beard, both with three goals. Beard also had two assists. Amber Walsh and Aleeshia Fisher scored one apiece, with Fisher assisting on three other goals. Rebecca Smith and Kricket Helms also assisted on two goals. Panthers Tessa Hart and Morgan Beard played in goal to shut out the Blue Devils. Hibriten's next match is against Newton-Conover Friday at home. The Thursday game against East Lincoln has been postponed due to league restrictions. Golf The Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute golf team competed in a Region X match at Bull Creek Golf and Country Club in Louisburg Wednesday. The Cobras finished with a team score of 349 to place fifth in the six-team match. The Louisburg College “A” team posted the victory with a team score of 290. Corey Brown from Louisburg had the low score with a 69. CCC&TI was paced by Steven Shuffler with a round of 80. The Cobras will return to action today in another Region X match at Cardinal Country Club in Selma.
