Saturday's local roundup

Down 25 in the first half, the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute men's basketball team rallied to tie the game late. However, Davidson County Community College emerged with a 105-101 victory Saturday in Lexington.

“Our guys played so hard,” said CCC&TI coach Mike Hainrihar. “The guys played so intense and showed so much character coming all the way back.”

Davidson was spearheaded by the one of the nation's most prolific scorers, Justin Strickland, who scored 47. The loss dropped the Cobras to 12-6 overall and to 0-2 in the Tar Heel Conference. Davidson improved to 17-4 and 3-0 in the Tar Heel.

With eight minutes remaining in the first half, the Cobras trailed 52-27. But they closed the first half on a 25-5 run to close the gap to 57-52 at the intermission.

The Cobras finally pulled even, 88-88, with four-and-a-half minutes to go, but Davidson responded with a 7-0 run and held off the Cobras the rest of the way.

Carlton Smith led the Cobra attack with 27 points, eight steals and eight rebounds. Athalie Rivera scored 25 and pulled down 14 boards. DeMario Garvin had 15 points with12 boards, and Clinton Sellers dished out eight assists and posted five steals from the guard spot.

The Cobras return home Wednesday for a key conference game against rival Catawba Valley Community College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Lady Cobras run into powerhouse

Division I junior college Louisburg College, which is nationally ranked, defeated the CCC&TI women Saturday 83-63 in Hudson.

“Louisburg is an outstanding team,” said CCC&TI coach Karen Trivett. “To be able to hang with them for a half says a lot about our team.”

Louisburg led 45-27 at the half, but the Lady Cobras trimmed the lead to 11 with eight minutes left. However, the Lady Hurricanes had too much depth and speed, especially when three CCC&TI players picked up four fouls.

Robin Waddell had another double-double for the Lady Cobras, scoring 22 and pulling in 13 rebounds. Keeyauna Powell scored 18 for CCC&TI (11-4) and had eight boards and six assists. Bree Oglesby had a team-best three steals.

Up next is Wednesday's home game against Wilkes Community College at 5 p.m.
