Now it's just Mondays that get me down

Lyrics from several songs make reference to people's feelings about rain. Some “love a rainy night,” while “rainy days and Mondays” get some people down.

I certainly can relate to Mondays getting a person down, especially starting at a long work week after a relaxing weekend. But I must admit, rainy days don't get me down, and I do love those rainy nights.

These days, perhaps we all should be singing the praises of rain.

During the last 15 months, we've gotten very little of the precious water from above, leaving our area in one of the worst droughts on record in North Carolina.

Maybe that's why every time there's rain in the forecast or a cloudy day, I always get a little giddy with an extra spring in my step about the possibility of getting wet.

Don't get me wrong, I love those crystal-clear days with Carolina blue skies that stretch as far as the eye can see. I thoroughly enjoy the chance to be out in the yard working or spending time at a park or maybe even just playing with the dogs.

But lately, I get excited about heavy clouds just ready to burst and shower our parched earth with thirst-quenching aqua relief.

I love to see the rain. We've seen so little of it lately, I dare say it would be had for any of us to really snub our nose when it starts to fall.

Now, we certainly don't want any monsoon-type rains to head our way and cause mass flooding and widespread damage to our homes or property. We don't need high winds, heavy thunderstorms and tornadoes touching down because of the weather. But surely we wouldn't complain to get a good soaking rain at least a couple of times a week or maybe more, simply to help pull us out of this drought we've been mired in for so long.

There was a time when I cringed at the thought of rain. It will ruin the ball game tonight or dirty up my just washed car.

Forget that. Let it rain, I say. Let it drop in buckets, wash out the game and splatter rain drops all over the car. The game can be made up, and the car can be washed later. The chances of rain may not come for a while longer.

We'll take whatever rain we can get.

Continue to be mindful, however, that our area remains under water restrictions. That being said, we need to continue adhering to those restrictions to conserve water because we're not certain what lies ahead as far as our drought situation is concerned.

Just because it rains does not mean those restrictions are to be forgotten. They have been issued for a reason, and that is to conserve water that we need for purposes greater than washing a car or making the lawn a lush green carpet for the summer. We still need rain and a lot of it to help us through this dry time.

So, when it does rain, sit back and enjoy it. Like that beautiful clear day, rainfall is another blessing God has bestowed upon us. Instead of letting it put a damper on our day (no pun intended), treat it as the godsend it is.
