Ellen Marshall

Ellen Reid Marshall, 92, of Granite Falls, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008, at the Lutheran Home Hickory West after a period of declining health.

She was born April 18, 1916, in Caldwell County, the eldest child of the late William V. and Martha Hollar Reid. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Garland P. Marshall, six brothers, one sister, as well as one grandson.

Ellen was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor. She was a long-standing member of Philadelphia Lutheran Church where she was active in W.E.L.C.A. She retired from the hosiery and manufacturing industries in Catawba and Caldwell counties.

Survivors include one son, William P. (Bill) Marshall and wife Barbara of Troutman, N.C.; one daughter Betty Jayne Hayes of Granite Falls; one sister, Mavis Reid Richards and husband Ray of Granite Falls; two granddaughters, Melissa Payton and husband Jim of Alpharetta, Ga., Martha Lawrence and husband Bill of Davidson, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Davis Lawrence of Davidson, N.C.; as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Lutheran Church of Granite Falls with the the Rev. John Bell officiating. A private burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
