Lois Suther
Lois McCarter Suther, 99, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A longtime resident of Lenoir, she was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sept. 26, 1908 to Carrie May Burdette and Enoch Newton McCarter. She was a graduate of Erskine College in Due West, S.C., majoring in piano, and taught elementary school in both North and South Carolina. During World War II she worked at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. She was married to the late Joseph Allan Suther for 60 years until his death in 1998, and is survived by her daughters, Jo Fowler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Sherry Lawson of Falls Church, Va., and grandson, Jonathan Martin of Arlington, Va. Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lenoir, where she was a teacher for children and adults, served as church librarian, and was active in women's groups. Memorials may be made to the building fund of the First United Methodist Church, 309 Church St. NW, Lenoir NC 28645; or to Vitas Hospice, 5420 NW 33rd Avenue, Suite 100, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309.
