Panthers get second at regionals

The Hibriten girls track and field team totaled 79 points Saturday and finished second in the 2-A Midwest Regional at Ledford High in Thomasville. Salisbury won with 119 points.

“We had a pretty good day,” Hibriten coach Ray Suddreth said. “We just got out-depthed.”

The Lady Panthers, who were third last year, won five events, including three relays. The team of Quiasiah Stinson, Brooklyn Chandler, Ashleigh Patterson and Amara Isbell won the 4x100 meter relay, while Stinson, Chandler, Isbell and Hannah Dula won the 4x200 and 4x400 races.

Chandler won the triple jump competition, while Isbell won the 200 meter dash. Stinson was second to her teammate in the 200 and Dula was runner-up in the 400. Also finishing in the top four and qualifying for Friday's state meet were Savannah Tester (third, 800) and Ashton Kirby (fourth, pole vault).

The Panther boys were led by Darius Lipford's second-place finish in the high jump and the runner-up finish by the 4x800 relay team of Stephen Bottoms, Sven Picton, Matt Stanfield and Zack Stanfield. Bottoms qualified for states individually by finishing fourth in the 800.

Three West Caldwell athletes will head to states. Justin Gragg was second in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, Tyler Bentley was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles and Chris Corpening finished third in the 400.

“Those three took care of business,” Warrior coach Craig Styron said.

At the 4-A West Regional in Charlotte, the South Caldwell girls finished sixth with 43 points. Tara Wilson qualified for states for the third year, finishing second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200. Adrian Cooke was third in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Jasmine Wilson qualified in both the shot put and the discus, finishing fourth in both events. She set a school record with a throw of 110 feet, three inches in the discus.

Dustin Potter was the lone Spartan boy to advance. In just his second year competing, he finished fourth in the pole vault.
