Simmons shines on the course

Hibriten golfer Alex Simmons fired a nine-hole round of 32 Thursday and was medalist in the first of two Catawba Valley Athletic Conference matches at Rock Barn in Hickory. Simmons won the first match by three strokes.

Hickory won the first match with a team score of 143, followed by Foard (148) and Hibriten (152). West Caldwell was ninth (177), led by Alex Franklin's 40.

The second match went to St. Stephens with a score of 152.

Hibriten was third with 155, West ninth with 180. Simmons shot 35, one shot back of leader Cass Sigmon of Bandys.

Hibriten now trails CVAC leader Hickory by 22 strokes in the season standings.

Soccer

Panthers fall at Shelby

The Hibriten soccer team lost 1-0 at Shelby Thursday. An own goal cost the Panthers in the final 15 minutes against last year's state runner-up. The Panthers had three shots hit the crossbar and other missed opportunities in what could have been a big win.

“I'm disappointed, but hope we can correct it against Patton tonight,” said Hibriten coach Shea Bridges.

The Panthers are now 6-6-1 overall.

Tennis

Panthers edge Foard

The Hibriten tennis team improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 with a 5-4 win over Foard Thursday.

Singles winners included Huntley Nero, Chris Clark, Erik Griffin and doubles wins came from Nero/Avery Nelson and Griffin with Wesley Bradford.

Hibriten returns to action at Patton Tuesday.

West ousts Maiden

The West Caldwell tennis team moved to 5-7 on the season Thursday with a 7-2 defeat of Maiden.

Winning singles matches for the Warriors were Jared Greer, Will Wilson, Josh Norwood, Matt Norwood and Spencer Davis. Greer and Wilson won in doubles, as did Matt Norwood and Nick Stanbury.

West plays at Bandys Monday.

MS Soccer

WLMS tops

East Alexander

The William Lenoir soccer team defeated East Alexander by a 4-0 score Thursday.

Scoring goals for the Wildcats were Elizabeth Baker, Brittany Bolger, Brooke Crouse and Mekayla Wyke. Bolger, Wyke, Crouse and Jennifer Crouse had assists. The shutout was notched by keeper Aleigha Patterson, with help from defenders Macy Franklin, Emily Conn, Tiffany Watkins, Autumn Clark.

The Wildcats, now 4-0-1, play Gamewell Tuesday.
