Hibriten rebounds
Tuesday's baseball roundup Fresh off a disheartening 5-4 loss to Foard in five innings Friday (weather), their first since March 6, the Hibriten Panthers bounced back Tuesday with a 3-1 win at Patton. Hibriten coach Terry Henthorne said his team responded well after the disappointment last week, losing a game they felt they could have won if the rains held off. “It's like somebody stole their cookies,” Hibriten coach Terry Henthorne. “They were ready to get back out there.” Hibriten (12-2 overall, 10-1 Catawba Valley Athletic Conference) was led by a strong pitching performance by Bryan Tuttle. Tuttle improved to 6-1 (most wins in the county), striking out five and walking none. Hibriten took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by Joel Woods and added a run in the fourth when Dylan Crump drew a walk with the bags loaded. Hibriten's final run came in the seventh when Billy Copper, who doubled, scored on a Trent Reynolds RBI-hit. Patton's lone run came in the fourth on a solo home run by Chris Fine. Hibriten's defense prevented runs in the second and sixth, on impressive plays by Matt Edwards and Jack Howard. Hibriten travels to West Caldwell Friday. West wins at Bandys After a slow start, the West Caldwell baseball squad appears to have found its footing. On the heels of a 1-7 start to the year, the Warriors dispatched Bandys 9-7 Tuesday for their fifth win in the past eight games. “Coming off (Monday's) disappointment (a 4-0 loss at Maiden), the guys responded well,” West Caldwell coach Kevin Abee said. “We played good enough to win, and we earned it. They didn't give it to us.” West scored one run in the fourth, four in the second and four in the sixth en route to the win. The Warriors tallied 12 hits behind starting pitcher A.J. Jenkins, who improved to 3-2 on the year with the win. Travis Harrison picked up the save with a scoreless seventh. West rallied in the second with a string of five hits, and in the sixth with some patience at the plate (four walks). Gordy Hendrix, Harrison, Jenkins and Jake Benfield all delivered key hits. West Caldwell hosts rival Hibriten Friday. Hibriten JVs win two The Hibriten junior varsity team improved to 12-2 Tuesday with a 19-0 win over Patton in five innings. Sean McGarvey was the winning pitcher and had four hits in the game. Matt Wedding also had four hits. Monday, the Panthers completed Friday's suspended game with Foard, downing the Tigers 11-6. Austin Beard picked up the win. Wedding, McGarvey, Jonathan Whitehead and Tyler Benge all had two hits.
