The South Caldwell girls track and field team 14 events Tuesday to win a six-team meet in Sawmills. South Caldwell totaled 230 points to defeat Alexander Central (138). West Caldwell was fifth with points.
Four Spartans won two events each. Adrian Cooke won the 100 (16.5 seconds) and 300 hurdles (49.7), Brittany Bartle won the 100 (13.15) and 200 (26.59), Amanda Bolick won the triple jump (27 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (14-02) and Jasmine Wilson took home wins in the shot put (33-05) and discus (91-03). Other Spartan wins went to Katelin Cooke in the 1,600 (5:34), Tara Wilson in the 800 (2:27.5) and Brittany Smith in the 3,200 (14:05). The Spartans won three relays (4x100 meter, 4x400, 4x800).
In the boys meet, East Burke won with 126 points. South was second with 124.
Dustin Potter tied a school record with a pole vault of 11-06. Josh Kanupp won the 100 for South (11.03) and Mason Holman the 800 (2:07).
West won the 4x100 (45.4), 4x200 (1:35) and the 4x400 (3:44). Tyler Bentley took wins in the 110 and 300 hurdles (15.9, 42.0, respectively), Chris Corpening won the 200 (22.75), and Michael Brooking won the 400 (55.07). Justin Gragg had three second-place finishes.
Soccer
Warriors thump Maiden
The West Caldwell soccer team won for the second straight day Tuesday, winning 4-0 at Maiden. Megan Hahn scored two goals for the Warriors. Kayla Smith and Jesse Greer had the other West goals. Kaleia Kent notched the shutout. The Warrior JV team won 8-1.
Up next for the Warriors is a match at Bandys Friday. Their non-conference match with Forbush, originally slated for today, has been moved to April 21.
Tennis
West tops Bunker Hill
West Caldwell edged Bunker Hill 5-4 Tuesday to improve to 4-7 overall. Winning matches for the Warriors were Jared Greer, Keon McKissick and Matt Norwood. The doubles duos of Greer and Will Wilson won as did Norwood with Oscar Carlson.
The Warriors next play Thursday at Maiden.
Panthers take first loss
The Hibriten tennis team dropped its first match Tuesday, losing 8-1 to Hickory.
Hibriten's lone win came in No. 3 doubles, as Erik Griffin and Wesley Bradford combined to defeat Jason Wimmer and Joe Wimmer 8-6.
The Panthers are 3-1 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference and 7-1 overall. Up next for the Panthers is a home match with Foard Thursday.
MS Baseball
Hornets win
Hudson defeated East Alexander 6-2 Tuesday behind a strong, six-inning pitching performance by Bryson Bowman.
Mariano Rivera came on to get the save in the seventh.
Colton Greene led the the Hornets at the plate with a 3-for-4 day. Tyler Moody was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Jordan Cook 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in.
Rivera hit a double. Other key hits came from Dylan Poarch, Jake Macchia and Justin Perkins.
Hudson, now 6-0, plays at Granite Falls Tuesday.
MS Soccer
Hudson wins 2-0
The Hudson soccer team won at East Alexander Tuesday by a 2-0 score. Both Hornet goals were scored by Jocelyn Cardona.
Taylor Burchette and Hannah Young combined for the shutout, which improved Hudson to 2-2.
The Hornets were playing in honor of their coach, 81-year-old Paul Menegay, who is currently away from the team.
WLMS tops Granite
The William Lenoir soccer team stayed undefeated with a 2-1 win over Granite Falls Tuesday. The Wildcats are now 3-0 on the young season.
William Lenoir's Brittany Bolger scored the opening goal off an assist from Aimee Sinclair. Granite Falls evened the match with a Katherin Connor goal before the half, with Rachel Lineback assisting.
Bolger scored the game-winner for William Lenoir in the second half. Wildcats Kayla Graham (as a defensive stopper), Mercedes Hooper and Sarah Storie (for midfield play) also played well.
William Lenoir plays at Granite (2-1-1) again today.
