Hibriten falls in OT
Wednesday's local roundup The Hibriten soccer team played to a scoreless tie through regulation with powerhouse Hickory Wednesday, then lost 2-0 in overtime. Kristin Laughlin scored two minutes into overtime to give the Red Tornadoes the edge, but Hibriten coach Shea Bridges was proud of his up-and-coming 2-A team. “It was a hard-fought game against a top team in our conference,” Bridges said. “I'm extremely proud of the girls' efforts today.” Hickory outshot Hibriten 11-6. Hibriten is 6-5-1 overall and 5-4 in the CVAC. Golf Panthers third at Catawba Springs Hibriten's golf team posted a score of 155 and finished in a tie for third place in Tuesday's conference meet at Catawba Springs. Hickory won with a score of 149. St. Stephens was second with 153, followed by the Panthers and Newton-Conover with 155 apiece. Sam Birckhead had the lowest score among county golfers, finishing two shots off the lead and one over par with a 37. Rounding out the scoring for Hibriten, Drew Harris had a 38 and Alex Simmons and Tanner Harris each shot 40. West Caldwell was led by Alex Franklin's 44. Cain Prestwood (45), T.J. Dula (47) and Jordan Harris and Caleb Branch (49 each) rounded out the Warrior scoring. West finished ninth with a score of 185. Hickory leads the way in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference's season standings with 466 strokes. Hibriten is second with 473. Other team scores Tuesday included Patton in fifth (162), followed by Bandys and Maiden (166), Foard (167) and Bunker Hill (207). Tennis Spartans win at East Burke The South Caldwell tennis team picked up a 5-4 win at Northwestern Conference foe East Burke. The Spartans won three singles matches and had two doubles victories to get the win. Winning singles matches for the Spartans were Steve Gullette, Mathew Kunkle and Brandon Stoddard. The Spartans return to action today at Watauga. Panthers perfect The Hibriten tennis team defeated Bandys 8-1 Wednesday to improve to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference. Winning singles matches for the Panthers were Avery Nelson, Huntley Nero, Chris Clark, Erik Griffin and Wesley Bradford. The Panthers swept doubles with wins by Nelson/Nero, Clark/Griffin and Sam Wright/Bradford. MS Baseball Hudson wins two Hudson defeated William Lenoir 18-3 in four innings Tuesday and followed that effort with a 15-5 win over Hibriten District Wednesday. On Tuesday, Thomas Redding was the winning pitcher and knocked two base hits. Mariano Rivera had three hits for the Hornets and Dylan Poarch finished with two hits. Wednesday, Tyler Moody earned the win for the Hornets and led the offense with a 4-for-4 day at the plate. Poarch, Jake Macchia, Colton Green and Justin Perkins each had two hits for Hudson. MS Soccer Granite Falls wins The Granite Falls girls soccer team defeated county foe Gamewell 2-0 Wednesday. Leah Sherrill and Catherine Conner scored goals for Granite Falls. Keeper Lindsay Potter notched the shutout. Granite Falls is now 2-0-1 on the season and returns to action Tuesday against rival William Lenoir. WLMS gets 5-1 win The William Lenoir soccer team defeated West Alexander 5-1 Wednesday. Mekayla Wyke scored two goals for the Wildcats. Other goals were scored by Macy Franklin, Brittany Bolger and Lindsay Holder. Franklin had an assist, as did Brooke Crouse, Jennifer Younce and Elizabeth Baker. Leading the defense was Tiffany Watkins and Autumn Clark. Mercedes Hooper was active in the midfield. The Wildcats are 2-0 in conference play. MS Softball Kings Creek wins Kings Creek defeated Happy Valley 19-7 Tuesday. Bailey Land pitched valiantly for the Vikings, striking out 10. Kayla Greene had a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Ten Vikings scored runs, including Land, Kim Barrett and Samantha Smargian who scored three apiece. Greene, Shelby Miller and Amber Hamby scored two each.
