Penny earns worth
By David Parsons, CorrespondentCody Penny continued the South Caldwell pitching domination by surrendering just one hit against the Burns Bulldogs en route to a 3-0 win in the second round of the Shelby Savings Bank Easter Tournament Wednesday. Penny upped his record to 3-0 with the victory. On the season, he has allowed just four hits in 17 innings pitched. He added seven more strikeouts to move his season total to 24 on the season. “I couldn't be more proud of the pitching staff right now,” Spartan coach Jeff Parham said. “Cody went out there and located his pitches well and was dominant against a good hitting team.” South Caldwell (10-1) now moves to the tournament championship game and will face Kings Mountain tonight at 7 p.m. in Shelby. Burns will face Crest in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Eric Shuford took the hard-luck loss for the Bulldogs. He struck out 10 Spartans and didn't allow a South Caldwell hit after the first inning when the Spartan offense scored all three of its runs. South's Dominic DiBernardi led off the game with a slow rolling infield single to short. DiBernardi stole his 12th base of the season and then moved to third on a wild pitch before Lucas Jackson walked. Jackson stole second before Brad Chavis singled to right field off Shuford to score DiBernardi and Jackson putting the Spartans ahead 2-0. Chavis' courtesy runner Cody Reid stole second and scored on a Tyler Dillard single to right field to extend the Spartan lead to 3-0. Penny faced the minimum number of batters through six innings and did not allow a hit until a high-chopping single off the bat of Shuford led off the seventh inning. Shuford was erased on a fielder's choice by Jacob Hamrick. Hamrick moved to second on a fielded pick-off attempt and to third on a groundout to South shortstop Dalton Hall. But Kaleb Brown softly popped out to Hall to end the Bulldog threat and the game.
