Accused shooter faces second murder charge
By Nathan Key, Managing EditorA Hickory man is facing another count of murder following the death of his wife from injuries related to a shooting last week. Barney Adrian Dunlap, 46, of 927 3rd Street SE, Hickory, was charged Monday with a second count of murder by officers with Lenoir Police Department after his wife, Roslyn Fox Dunlap, 45, of 828 Queens Street, Lenoir, died Saturday around 7:20 p.m. at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Barney Dunlap was charged Friday, May 9 with one count of murder in the shooting death of Gerald Keith Lakey, 32, of 921 Times Ave., Bremerton, Wash. He also was charged at that time with the attempted murder of Roslyn Dunlap, a charge that has been dropped with the additional murder charge being brought against him. LPD Capt. Scott Brown said Friday that Roslyn Dunlap was listed at Baptist in stable but critical condition and was to go through surgery. But Roslyn Dunlap died of her injuries, prompting LPD investigators to add the second murder count for Barney Dunlap, who is being held in the Caldwell County Detention Center without bond. Brown said investigators had hoped to speak with Roslyn Dunlap to see if she could shed more light on the case and give them more details about what happened during the domestic dispute. “This is one of the most tragic kinds of cases,” Brown said. “You still have members of the family who need their mothers and fathers, their sons and daughters, and both, in this case, have been taken away.” Barney Dunlap was arrested initially at 2:38 a.m. Friday by LPD Officer Gary Dishman in a parking lot off Harper Avenue in Lenoir. He approached Dishman and told the officer he had killed his wife and her boyfriend. Dishman took Dunlap into custody and dispatched another officer to 828 Queens Street. When he arrived, Cpl. James Moore discovered that two people had been shot. Lakey was pronounced dead at the scene, and Caldwell County EMS transported Roslyn Dunlap to Caldwell Memorial Hospital before she later was taken to Baptist. At the time of the shootings, medical personnel gave Roslyn Dunlap “a 50-50 chance of survival,” Brown said. The preliminary investigation shows that the Dunlaps recently had separated, and that both victims were shot inside the residence on Queens Street in the abdominal area with a 12-gauge shotgun. Brown said the only statement made by Barney Dunlap was that he killed his wife and her boyfriend. Brown also said there is no evidence to indicate alcohol or drugs being involved in the shootings. Brown added there is evidence to show that there was some premeditation involved on Barney Dunlap's part, and investigators are looking at that evidence as they continue to build their case. Investigators with Lenoir Police Department and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations continue to follow the case. Anyone with information can contact LPD at 757-2100 or Crimestoppers at 758-8300. Last week's homicides are the second and third investigated by Lenoir Police Department this year and the fourth in Caldwell County.
