Man killed in dispute

A domestic dispute turned deadly Thursday night, leading to the arrest of a Hickory man on murder charges by officers with Lenoir Police Department.

Barney Adrian Dunlap, 46, of 927 3rd Street SE, Hickory, was arrested at 2:38 a.m. Friday by LPD Officer Gary Dishman in a parking lot off Harper Avenue in Lenoir.

Dunlap approached Dishman and told the officer he had killed his wife and her boyfriend. Dishman took Dunlap into custody and dispatched another officer to 828 Queens Street, the address given to him by Dunlap.

When he arrived shortly thereafter, Cpl. James Moore discovered that the two people Dunlap spoke of had been shot.

The victims were Gerald Keith Lakey, 32, of 921 Times Ave., Bremerton, Wash., and 45-year-old Roslyn Fox Dunlap of 828 Queens Street, Lenoir. Lakey was pronounced dead at the scene, and Caldwell County EMS transported Roslyn Dunlap to Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

She later was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem where she was in critical but stable condition Friday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation shows that the Dunlaps recently had separated, and that both victims were shot inside the residence on Queens Street in the abdominal area with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Barney Dunlap was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. He was held in the Caldwell County Detention Center without bond.

LPD Capt. Scott Brown said the only statement made by Barney Dunlap was that he killed his wife and her boyfriend.

Brown said there is no evidence to indicate alcohol or drugs being involved in the shootings. He also noted that Barney Dunlap turning himself in may have saved the life of Roslyn Dunlap.

“We were fortunate he chose to do that,” Brown said. “Officer Dishman's quick response probably saved Mrs. Dunlap's life. It was fortunate (Dishman) was where he was when he was, otherwise, this case might not have ended the way it did.”

Investigators with Lenoir Police Department and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations continue to follow the case. Anyone with information relevant to the case can contact LPD at 828-757-2100 or Crimestoppers at 828-758-8300.

The homicide is the second investigated by Lenoir Police Department this year and the third in Caldwell County.
