29ers get win at home

News-Topic Sports Staff

The Caldwell Post 29 baseball team improved to 6-2 on the season Monday with a 3-0 win over Taylorsville Post 170 in Granite Falls.

The game was called in the fifth inning because of inclement weather moving through Caldwell County.

Bryan Tuttle picked up his second win in as many decisions for the 29ers, allowing just two Taylorsville hits through five innings. Tuttle worked quickly and threw just 43 pitches Monday, including only five in the fourth inning and six in the fifth.

"I thought he was in charge again tonight," Caldwell coach Gary Hamby said. "He certainly threw the ball as well as he has. I was glad to get him on the mound at home. He didn't disappoint."

Caldwell took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning after Jordan Nelson led off the game with a triple down the first base line. Shane Clawson followed him by walking on four straight pitches, and Clawson stole second moments later. Josh Severt then hit a slow roller to third, which allowed Nelson to come around to score. Severt was thrown out at first, but an errant throw back to third in an attempt to get Clawson allowed the second 29er run to come in.

Caldwell added to its lead in the fourth when Zach Merriken walked with one out. Matt Edwards followed with a double to right-center field to set up Dalton Hall with runners at second and third.

Hall grounded out to second to score Merriken.

Taylorsville had no runners advance past second base, but had runners on first and second in the third before Tuttle escaped.

The 29ers, now 5-1 in Area IV's Western Division, begin a two-week span of non-divisional opponents tonight by playing host to Gastonia at M.S. Deal Stadium.

The game is a rematch of Caldwell's season opener. The 29ers won that game 5-2.

South 'B' wins two

The South Caldwell Legion B baseball team won a doubleheader at Taylorsville Sunday. South won the first game 15-4 and the second 4-2.

In the first game, David Evans pitched for the win and also helped himself at the plate with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Travis Cook added a home run and Jonathan Gray and Cody Reid had two hits apiece to go with three and two RBIs, respectively.

Tyler Bumgarner pitched South to the win in the second game. Gray had two hits and drove in three runs with a triple. Reid added a pair of hits.

South plays Wednesday against Hickory at South Caldwell High School. Game time is 5 p.m.
