Juanita Holden became worried after her husband didn’t return home on Thursday night after visiting a friend’s house.

Friday morning, she went searching for him, and found his blue Chevrolet truck wrecked some 50 feet in the woods off Abington Road, about a mile from their home on Overland Road, with his body under the wreckage around 10:30.

David Holden, 48, was traveling west on Abington Road when the truck went left across the road just past Confidence Church Road and struck an embankment before colliding with multiple trees, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper T.C. Williams said. He was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle through the passenger window, and the truck came down on top of him, pinning him under one of the rear tires.

There was no indication of what may have caused the truck to leave the road, Williams said.

Excessive speed did not seem to be a factor in the accident, Williams said. The speed limit on the road is 55 miles per hour, fast enough for the truck to behave as it did once it left the roadway.

Holden apparently did not apply the brakes, Williams said, citing a lack of skid marks in the road.

The Highway Patrol found some open alcohol containers in the vehicle, but probably will not seek a toxicology report on Holden's blood, Williams said.
