Brandon Kirby promoted to News-Topic production director
A native of Caldwell County holds the fate of each day's News-Topic in his hands.
Brandon Kirby, 27, was named the News-Topic's production director Nov. 25, giving him responsibility over the pressroom, mailroom and warehouse. He previously had been the paper's assistant pressroom supervisor. He replaces Justus Robinson.
Kirby said he never would have thought of working on a newspaper press until he came to work in the News-Topic's mailroom in 2008. Growing up he may have thought he would work in construction or become a car mechanic. After graduating from West Caldwell High School he received an online degree in auto mechanics, and he worked on cars a lot -- and still does.
But that interest in mechanics drew him within months toward the idea of working the press that produces the newspaper.
"You have to be mechanically inclined to do the maintenance on it," he said.
Once he got into working the press, it was more than the mechanics that kept him interested.
"I just like printing," he said. "It's never the same. Each run is always different."
Kirby lives in Grace Chapel with his wife, Nikki, and 15-month-old daughter, Addison.
