J.T. Ritch, a Libertarian candidate for Congress in 2014, will speak at 7 p.m. in Room 7 of the Caldwell County Public Library in Lenoir.

Today is the deadline to register and prepay for a buffet dinner to welcome sculptors in the 28th annual Sculpture Celebration and to introduce the judge and sponsors of the event. When members within a church’s “family” experience a death, all the congregation feels the loss. Caldwell Hospice offers two bereavement programs for them. "Walking the Mourner’s Path" is a spiritually directed grief support group which meets for eight 1½-hour sessions to “transform grief into joyful living.” "The Limit of Our Sight," a three-hour classroom experience, combines Bible study and common-sense ideas to help churches meet the needs of their members who are grieving. They start on Sept. 4, noon to 1:30 p.m., in Meeting Room A at the Robbins Center, 526 Pine Mountain Road, Hudson. You can purchase lunch for $5 or bring your own. Friday, Sept. 6

The town of Hudson will host the last “Pickin’ In The Park” music concert 7-9 p.m. In concert will be New Journey, a regional Southern gospel group made up of Bill Warren, Angie Warren, Dillon Warren, Jay Ayers, Mike Shew and Bob Woods. Saturday, Sept. 7

Gamewell Ruritan Club will host the monthly "Big Country Breakfast" fundraiser at the Gamewell Ruritan Clubhouse, 3038 Morganton Blvd., 7-10 a.m. It will be serving Hot Buttermilk Biscits, Gravy, Grits, Eggs, a variety of breakfas meats, Apples, Jams, Jelly, Tea and Coffee. (Pancakes are available upon request.) Adult plates are $6, plates for children 6 and under $3. Biscuits are available for take out for $2. Profits support ongoing community service projects. The 28th annual Sculpture Celebration will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at T.H. Broyhill Walking Park in Lenoir. Admission is free. It will feature more than 150 sculptures – realistic and abstract, traditional and contemporary, movable and stationary, indoor and outdoor – by artists from across the United States who are competing for cash prizes totaling more than $10,000. Food vendors, art for children, and live music are featured throughout the day.

The Hudson Lions Club will have a broom sale 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the FairValue in Hudson.

There will be a "Mending Madison’s Heart" benefit 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gamewell Ruritan Club on Morganton Boulevard. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. There will be live music with Mitch Clark. Proceeds will go toward the medical expenses of the family of Madison Rae Kidd, who was born June 8 with a congenital heart defect and is scheduled to receive open heart surgery Sept. 12.

The Cruise In in Uptown Lenoir will be 4-9 p.m. A NASCAR Official Show Car will be on display near the square, sponsored by Clay Insurance Co. The Cruise In Club will be collecting new and gently used coats for children near the square. 50/50 tickets and T-shirts will be for sale. Parties With Purpose Inc. will host its third annual Cupcakes & Cocktails fundraiser at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir at 7 p.m. The evening will include heavy hors d'oeuvres, music, dancing and more. The highlight of the event will be the Cupcake Competition. Amateur bakers are invited to participate and show everyone who takes the cake. Thursday, Sept. 12

Jon Meacham, the author of a biography of Thomas Jefferson that won a Pulitzer Prize, will appear at Lenoir-Rhyne University to kick off the 2013-14 Visiting Writers Series at 7 p.m. in P.E. Monroe Auditorium on campus. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. This event is open to the public, and free for all guests. No tickets or reservations are required. Meacham will bring stories of legendary U.S. presidents and prominent world leaders to life.

Saturday, Sept. 14

The Kings Creek Ruritan Club is having a BBQ on Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 11 a.m. serving chicken, pork and wings with cole slaw, baked beans, roll and dessert. The plates are $8 each. The Kings Creek Ruritan club is located on N.C. 18 in the Kings Creek community. Proceeds will help fund the club's ongoing community projects.

Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care invites prospective volunteers to participate in its adult volunteer training today and Sept. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Meeting Room B at the Robbins Center, 526 Pine Mountain Road, Hudson. Attendance at both sessions is required. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be served each day. Topics will include the hospice philosophy, standards of care, the Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care history, family dynamics when a loved one is dying, communication and safety procedures, best responses to dying patients’ wishes and the wishes of their families, and other practical subjects.
