Man hospitalized after trying to save dog from fire
A couple coming home from church Sunday found their house on fire and tried to save their dog.
The dog died, and Justin Winebarger had to be taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Justin and Tiffany Winebarger and their child arrived home at 2218 Olde Valley Drive in Lenoir just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday. By the time Lenoir firefighters arrived a few minutes later, a water line to the washing machine had ruptured, and the spewing water extinguished the fire, Deputy Fire Chief Ken Hair said.
The house suffered smoke damage throughout, but the fire was contained to the laundry room and a portion of a den, Hair said.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Monday.
Damages were estimated at $15,000 to the house and $20,000 to its contents.
