Valdese man drowns at Lake Rhodhiss
A Valdese man drowned at Lake Rhodhiss shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday while swimming with two friends, officials said.
Gregory Paul Bordeleau, 40, and the friends were jumping into the lake on the Caldwell County side of the lake from a rock cliff above the Lake Rhodhiss dam. The person who reported the accident to 911 told investigators that Bordeleau slipped and fell about 25 feet into the water, striking his head on the rocks as he fell, a press release from the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office said. Bordeleau went under the water and never resurfaced.
Emergency crews from numerous agencies, launching at the boat landing commonly known as the Tater Hole in Granite Falls, found Bordeleau's body about 8 a.m. Sunday in about 35 feet of water.
The investigation is continuing, but the death appears to have been an accident, the press release said.
