A Lenoir man accused of trying to rob a Morganton restaurant at gunpoint is being investigated in several armed robberies in Caldwell and Catawba counties.

Scott James Hill, 34, of Enlos Place is accused of approaching employees of Fatz Cafe on South Sterling Street near the back door late Monday, pointing a gun, according to an arrest report. But the employees tackled Hill, who was wearing a gray shirt wrapped around his head, sunglasses, work gloves and a blue hoodie, and held him until police arrived. His bond was set at $200,000 secured.

There are some similarities between what Morganton police reported in Monday's incident and a string of armed robberies in Caldwell and Catawba counties -- including that each incident took place close to closing time for the business, and the gunman in each was wearing a hoodie or something covering his head.

"We are in contact with the Morganton Department of Public Safety, and are investigating that angle," said Lenoir Police Capt. Couby Stilwell.

On March 6, the Market Basket convenience store on Grace Chapel Road in Granite Falls was robbed about 10 p.m. by a white man wearing a gray hoodie, black pants and black shoes, with a bandana across his face.

On April 2, a white man wearing a mask, a hoodie and blue jeans robbed the Ruby Tuesday restaurant on Blowing Rock Boulevard in lenoir just before 11 p.m.

On April 7, a masked gunman robbed employees at the Carmike Westgate Twin Cinema on Morganton Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Witnesses could not provide a good description of the man.

On April 15, a man wearing a mask approached an employee outside the Captain's Galley restaurant in Granite Falls about 9:45 p.m., showed a handgun and demanded the employee to take him to the manager, Granite Falls police said. The man was described as white with a black cloth mask, a gray hoodie, blue denim jeans and white tennis shoes.

On April 12 a gunman also tried to rob the Pizza Hut on U.S. 321 in Hickory. A gunman also donned a mask and displayed a handgun, and robbed the restaurant around closing time,
