A wreck on Blowing Rock Boulevard in northern Caldwell County late Friday afternoon sent four people to area hospitals and backed up traffic.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. about four miles south of Blowing Rock, said N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Brad Hyatt. Alex Leiva, 28, of Lenoir was driving a 1998 Honda sedan south when the car hit wet pavement and slid into northbound lanes, striking a 2013 Honda Pilot being driven by Donald Hedrick, 84, of Hickory head-on.

Leiva and a passenger, 19-year-old Kristobel Mendoza of Lenoir, were taken by Caldwell EMS to Caldlwell Memorial Hospital. Hedrick and his wife, 72-year-old Judith Hedrick, were taken to Watauga Hospital. All suffered non-life threatening injuries, Hyatt said.

Leiva was charged with exceeding a safe speed for the conditions, and driving with no operator’s license.
