Filing period starts Monday
The filing period for some Caldwell County offices starts on Monday at noon and ends Friday, Feb. 28, at noon.
Candidates for sheriff, clerk of superior court and the Caldwell County Board of Commissioners can file at the Caldwell County Board of Elections office in the Alden E. Starnes Administration Building in downtown Lenoir. Filing fees are $57 for the board of commissioners, $580.61 for sheriff and $833.90 for clerk of superior court. The fee is based on 1 percent of the pay for the position.
The terms of two county commissioners, Mike LaBrose and Chris Barlowe, expire this year. Caldwell County Clerk of Superior Court Kim Clark is serving the remainder of the unexpired term of Sandie Cannon, who retired last year.
The Republican and Democratic primary elections, if needed, for local, state, U.S. House and U.S. Senate will take place May 6. State Sen. Dan Soucek, state Rep. Edgar Starnes, U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan and U.S. Rep Mark Meadows all have terms ending this year. Candidates for those offices don’t file at the county level.
Candidates for the Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Caldwell County Board of Education aren’t required to file until June and July of this year, respectively, because the elections in those races are non-partisan and don’t require a party primary.
