Fire destroys home on Globe Road
Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that leveled a house on Globe Road Thursday morning.
The wood house stood just inside the Avery County line about a quarter-mile off Caldwell County's Edgemont Road. A neighbor, Hannah Trice, called 911 after she saw flames coming from the direction of the house as daylight was breaking.
"I went outside about 6:50 a.m. to warm the car up and went inside but didn't see anything," she said. "Just after 7 a.m. I went back outside to go to work and saw the house was on fire."
The fire rapidly spread up a steep bank across the narrow gravel Globe Road and onto her property above.
Linville Fire Chief Mark Taylor said about two acres burned, but the fire was contained quickly. His department got the call around 7:15 a.m. and arrived about 20 minutes later. When he got there, the house was already mostly destroyed. By mid-morning, a chimney stood above the smoke and rubble as firefighters sprayed water over occasional flare-ups.
No one was at home at the time of the fire. The owner, known by neighbors as "Peanut," was known to stay at the house on weekends and in the summer.
