1 dead after shooting in Whitnel
Authorities investigating a report of a shooting at a residence in Whitnel about 4 p.m. found a body, but no details about the situation were available late Thursday.
Lenoir police and Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office deputies swarmed to the area at the end a short road off Connelly Springs Road north of Southwest Boulevard.
Chris Huffman, who lives nearby, said he was outside when he heard a shot ring out in the cool, sunny afternoon.
“It sounded like a rifle shot,” he said.
The sound came from an area that Huffman estimated to be about 75 yards from the end of the paved portion of Tara Place. Small houses line the narrow road. A mobile home sits about 50 yards past the end of the pavement, where the deputies converged, in an area known to residents as “the holler.”
“People go down there to shoot all the time,” said Rick Tripplet, who owns land nearby. “I just got home from work and saw all these police cars. I didn’t know what happened.”
Triplett said a woman lives in the mobile home with her two daughters, one of whom has a small child.
A woman and a baby could be seen Thursday inside a deputy’s patrol car near the mobile home.
The sheriff’s office would not release any information on the shooting by late Thursday.
