Board memberships shift in Granite Falls

The makeup of Granite Falls’ board of adjustment and planning board shifted a bit Monday night, as the town council approved recommendations made by the town’s board adjustments committee.

Mike Mathewson, formerly an alternate member of the board of adjustment, will serve as a full member following the resignation of Becky Barlow. Mathewson will complete Barlow’s term, which expires June 30, 2015.

Alan Hemphill was appointed an alternate member of the board of adjustment, replacing Mathewson.

Scott Reid was appointed an extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) member of the town’s planning board, replacing Robert Duncan, who moved out of the ETJ during his term. Reid will complete Duncan’s term, which expires June 30, 2014.

The town also scheduled public hearings on two zoning text amendments. One potential change is a clarification of wording, while the other is a response to changes in state law which state that boards of adjustment no longer have to advertise public hearings in local newspapers (a change that differentiates the board of adjustment from the town council, which is still required to purchase this type of advertising).

The town council also heard a report on the Granite Falls Recreation Department from Recreation Director Tim Cooke. Participation in athletic programs was down slightly in 2013, Cooke said.
