Several cows with gun wounds must be killed

A total of seven cows have been shot in recent weeks in the Petra Mill Road and Granite Falls areas, and several will have to be put to death because of their wounds, Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and Caldwell County Animal Control said in a press release Friday.

The sheriff's office put out word Thursday it was seeking more information about the shootings. The new press release added more detail about what has been happening.

In late May, the sheriff's office investigated the shooting of a cow but could not determine whether the shooting was accidental. In July, five cows were found shot in the Petra Mill Road area, two with wounds through the leg above the hoof area and a few, including a calf, with wounds in the hip area. Those with hip wounds are not recovering and will have to be put down, the press release said. A cow was found dead this month in the Grace Chapel Road area, though it was too decomposed when found to determine how it died.

Another cow in the area is missing and presumed dead.
