Same-day surgery facility coming to Granite Falls

Caldwell Memorial Hospital is expanding again with a same-day outpatient surgery facility in Granite Falls.

The 22,000-square-foot building is planned for a site near the Walmart Supercenter on the east side of U.S. 321 and is described as a "multi-specialty surgical center" that will focus predominantly on orthopedic and spine surgery, said David Horn, the vice president of business development at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. It is expected to open in 2016.

Because it will be close to “the fastest-growing population in Caldwell County,” people in the area will have quick, efficient access so they can have their surgery and recuperate at home instead spending more time and money at the hospital for simple procedures, said Horn.

“We’re just very pleased that we’re adding to the service that we already have (Falls Medical Park in Granite Falls) in the southeast of the county,” Horn said. “Granite Falls was the last place in the county that we put a medical park. We started with one physician, and now I think we have 12 down there. We think it will just be a win for everybody because of the lower cost, ease of access and the heightened patient experience.”

Because the building will be on a nearly seven-acre site, “That’s a future growth opportunity there,” Horn said.

Horn was unable to determine how much the project will cost at this time. He said the hospital's previous same-day surgery project, Hancock Surgery Center off of Morganton Blvd. in Lenoir, cost about $3 million.

“I really don’t have a ballpark figure on that, but it’s a bunch,” he laughed. “It’s just too early in the game to be hanging a number on that at this point.”
