Motorcyclist Joshua Lee Shumaker killed on Connelly Springs Road
An Ashe County man died Wednesday evening from injuries he sustained when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a car in Cajah's Mountain early Wednesday.
Joshua Lee Shumaker, 24, of 125 Ed Taylor Road in West Jefferson was going south on Connelly Springs Road on a 2013 VIP motorcycle shortly before 1 a.m. He was going about 30 mph and was near Cajah's Mountain Road when a 1007 Ford Focus driven by Katherine Bowles, 41, of 2920 Hidden Meadows in Lenoir came up behind him going about 45 mph and hit his motorcycle, Trooper Myrl Pennington of the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Shumaker was knocked 30 feet through the air and landed in the roadway. He suffered head trauma and was flown to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday, Pennington said.
Bowles was not speeding. She had not been charged by Thursday, but charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation, Pennington said.
Shumaker's driver's license had been suspended, but he had not been licensed to drive motorcycles. He also lacked insurance for the motorcycle, and it did not have a valid inspection sticker.
