3-car wreck on Morganton Boulevard sends 5 to hospitals
Five people went to area hospitals after a three-car wreck on Morganton Boulevard late Thursday afternoon. The man who police say caused the accident was jailed on multiple charges, including driving while impaired.
The accident, which tied up traffic for about an hour, occurred around 5:30 p.m. when a silver Honda Civic traveling west tried to turn left on to Calico Road and collided with a red Ford Focus, said Trooper Jason Goudelock of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The impact sent the Ford Focus colliding into the side of a Volkswagon Jetta, and then the Focus flipped into the air and landed on its top off the side of the road.
Taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital were the driver of the Focus, Marth Melton Sigmon, 55, of Lenoir; the driver of the Jetta, Alexis Marie Christian, 18, of Lenoir; and two passengers of the Honda Civic. A third passenger in the Civic was taken to Valdese Hospital. All five were treated and released.
The driver of the Civic, Steve Thomas Carlton, 32, of Lenoir was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, failure to yield, and having an open container of alcohol. A passenger in the Civic, Harrison James Ford, 22, of Lenoir, was charged with aiding and abetting driving while impaired and allowing an unlicensed person to drive.
