Mary Ruth Ayers, 94, formerly of Boone, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Autumn Care of Drexel.
Born Aug. 6, 1918, in Walnut Cove, she was a daughter of James William and Sarah Rebecca Smith Lasley. Mrs. Ayers was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boone. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, majoring in elementary education, and taught in the Watauga County School System for 26 years. Mrs. Ayers was a member of the Boone Garden Club and a member at large of the National DAR.
She is survived by her son, Grant R. Ayers Jr. and wife Alice of Morganton; five grandchildren, James R. Ayers of Morganton, Michael Lee Ayers and wife Michele of Wilmington, Charles Patterson Ayers and wife Lara of Wilmington, Mary Virginia Owens and husband Phillip of Clemmons, and Sara Katie Parvin of Lexington; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Kosydar and husband Walt of Toledo, Ohio, and Susie Lasley of Winston-Salem.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Robert Ayers Sr.; daughter, Janice A. Sanford; four brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ruth Ayers will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Roy Dobyns. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 o’clock until 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Burke Hospice & Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690. Nora Dianne Baird Setzer, 53, of Lenoir passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
Ms. Setzer was born in Avery County to the late Lester Calloway Baird and Ruth Elizabeth Johnson Baird. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and a member of New Life Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Joshua Harris and wife Sarah of Lenoir; her sister, Connie Wells-Minton and husband Gary of Granite Falls; brothers, Robert “Bob” Baird of Granite Falls, Steve Baird and wife Toni of Lenoir, Jeff Baird of Valdese, and Bryan Baird and wife Brenda of Granite Falls; and grandchildren, Heidi Harris and Elias Harris.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Pastor Brian Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home prior to the service at 1 p.m.
The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.

Barry Scott Foster, 60, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice. He was born in Wilkes County on April 18, 1952, to the late Chelsie Wyatt Foster and Verna Bullis Foster. He was married to Mary Ellen Killian Foster of the residence.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Jean McCloud and brothers, Kenneth Paige Foster, and Sheldon Cordell Foster.
Other than his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Julie Truesdale; brother, the Rev. Douglas K. Foster; sister, Mona Foster Hamby; granddaughter, Kayla Marie McCloud; grandson, Trevor Lee Truesdale; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at 12:30 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Kenneth Poarch officiating. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mark McCloud, Jasen Truesdale, Elmer Guinn, Gary Hamby, Tony Foster, and Thomas Jensen. Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Allen and Jerry Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. prior to the service.
