People coming for services at two Hudson-area churches Sunday morning arrived to find they had been broken into, and cash, computers and sound equipment were stolen from them.

The next day, William McKinley Lefever, 34, of Drag Strip Road in Hudson was in jail.

The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office on Sunday was contacted by Center Grove Baptist Church at 3176 Deal Mill Road and Mount Carmel Baptist Church at 3555 Christie Road, which are about a mile apart. A small amount of money, sound equipment and laptop computers were reported missing from Carmel Baptist Church. Thousands of dollars in cash and laptop computers were taken from Center Grove Baptist Church. Both churches also suffered damage from the break-ins. The stolen property was recovered.

Video from surveillance cameras at the churches showed someone whom investigators believed was Lefever. They searched his residence and a house on Benfield Drive in Sawmills and found the missing property. He charged with two counts of breaking and entering a place of worship and two counts of larceny, both felonies. His bond was set at $50,000 secured.

Lefever previously was convicted in September 2013 in Caldwell County of misdemeanor larceny.
