A Granite Falls teenager driving to school crossed the center line of Pinewood Road in a curve and hit another car about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, injuring one person in each car, police said.

Derrick Steven Puckett, 17, of Brandy Place in Granite Falls, who was driving a yellow 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, was charged with driving too fast for the conditions -- the road was wet at the time -- and driving left of center, Sgt. Calem Kirby of the Granite Falls Police Department said. A 15-year-old girl riding in the back seat of the Mazda, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. A front-seat passenger in the Mazda, Karie Marie Burgess, 17, of Colonial Avenue in Granite Falls, was not badly injured.

Also taken to Frye was the driver of the black 2009 Mazda 6 that Puckett hit, David Wayne Canipe, 48, of Stonegate Farm Drive in Granite Falls, Kirby said.

No information was available about the conditions of Canipe and the girl were not available. Kirby described their injuries as not life-threatening.
