Family homeless, dog killed
Twice on Monday, Charles Barrett thought he had extinguished a fire that flared up between a bedroom and the kitchen inside his family's mobile home off Windsong Circle. But the fire flared up a third time about 9 p.m.
"I put it out the first time, and I got the kids to my parents house," Barrett said. "I came back, checked inside, and it again flared up in the bedroom wall. I got most of it out, so I went to take the kids to my mother-in-law's house when my wife said it flared up again. By then it was fully engulfed."
Barrett, 45, his wife, Chastity, 40, and their two children, Bobby, 7, and Alicina, 5, got out safely, but their 4-year-old brindle dog, Trip, did not.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday. The Caldwell County Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
The Barretts, who are staying at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Lenoir temporarily, did not have insurance on the trailer, said Charles Barrett's father, Bobby Barrett.
