Jonathan Wayne Broyhill and Nathan Richard Hahn were good friends growing up in Lenoir. Broyhill served as best man when married Jameson Kirk 2009 in Kirk's hometown of Orangeburg, S.C. The three of them stand together in photo on Facebook, happily sipping umbrella drinks at a resort, and all three entered political consulting in Raleigh.
But police say that Broyhill, 31, attacked the couple late Monday afternoon at the Hahns' house in Raleigh, leaving 29-year-old Jameson Hahn, known as Jamie, in critical condition Tuesday at WakeMed hospital. A spokeswoman at WakeMed said Nation Hahn, 27, had been treated and released. Broyhill also was injured and was reported was in good condition.
Details of the incident, including how Broyhill came to be injured, were not released Tuesday.
The families of the couple issued a statement Tuesday afternoon that read: “Jamie Hahn is fighting for her life, and Nation, her husband, is by her side. Our families and her friends are devastated. We deeply appreciate the thoughts and expressions of love we have received.
“Jamie is a strong and courageous young woman and a bright light to us all. Pray for her.”
Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said officers received a call about 5:30 p.m. Monday from the 6600 block of Tealbriar Drive, where Jamie Hahn had run after being stabbed. The News and Observer reported that a woman who called 911 told an emergency dispatcher that Jamie Hahn was on the ground “bleeding terribly” from wounds to her stomach while neighbors tried to help her.
“She’s here in someone else’s yard,” said the unidentified woman who made the call. “I don’t know where she ran here from.”
Police followed a trail of blood to the Hahns' house on Tealwood Place.
Nation Hahn is an online political strategist who has worked with former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, other Democratic politicians and non-profit organizations, including the Sierra Club and the Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families, which worked against the state constitutional amendment prohibting same-sex marriage.
Jamie Hahn, a fundraiser, also has worked on campaigns for Edwards and other politicians. Broyhill reportedly worked with her.
The Hahns graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill.
A family spokeswoman said two websites have been started for donations to help pay for the couple’s medical bills:
