Cory Travis Vanover of Morganton charged with murder
Lenoir police arrested a Morganton man Wednesday night in the death of a homeless man whose body was found Jan. 24 behind Lenoir Mall.
Cory Travis Vanover, 24, of 2065 U.S. 70 East is charged with one count of first-degree murder. He is accused of killing Michael Wade Taylor, 28.
Taylor died as a result of several injuries he appeared to have received in a fight, police said last week.
No further details about the death were released Wednesday night. Capt. Sid Pope of the Lenoir Police Department said investigators were still interviewing Vanover and likely would be late into the night.
“We’re still investigating this thing,” he said.
Taylor’s body was discovered about 1:45 p.m. Jan. 24 near a makeshift campsite where police believe Taylor had been staying. Taylor’s previous last known address was 330A Woodsway Lane, Lenoir.
Little is known of Taylor, who often dined at the Lenoir Soup Kitchen. Folks who frequent the soup kitchen are treated like family by staff.
“He seemed real polite when he came in here,” said executive director Angel Moretz in an interview last week. “He wouldn’t come in every day; it could be weeks at a time. He had been coming in for about six months. We all were wondering what happened to him.”
