Caldwell man's headless body found in Linville Gorge
The headless body of a man last seen over a week ago in Granite Falls was found Monday off N.C. 105 near Linville Gorge.
Investigators say Damond Lamont "Peanut" Kincaid, 31, who recently had been living staying in Winston-Salem but had an address in Caldwell County, was shot and his body dumped in the gorge area. Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant said authorities had not found Kincaid's head Monday and weren't sure yet how the head was removed.
David Matthew Higgins, 32, of 212 Jim Wall St. in Morganton and Jacob Dean Coley, 17, of N.C. 126 in Morganton were arrested Monday. Higgins was charged with murder. Coley, accused of failing to report the killing after he learned of it, was charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder.
Kincaid was last seen with Higgins in a gray Hummer belonging to Higgins' uncle, the press release said, and Kincaid's family reported him missing to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday.
Higgins' uncle allowed detectives to search the Hummer, and they found blood in the front passenger seat, and found at least two small-caliber bullet casings in the back seat, the press release said.
Higgins denied any connection to Kincaid's disappearance, but Coley later told detectives that Higgins had come to his house the early morning hours of Aug. 11 and said he had shot Kincaid and dumped his body, the press release said.
On Monday, the State Bureau of Investigation again interviewed Higgins, and he admitted he had killed Kincaid and dumped his body, the press release said. He then led detectives to the body, about 20 yards off N.C. 105.
