A fire that may have been intentionally set caused serious damage to a vacant house on Archer Street in Granite Falls early Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

A Granite Falls police officer on routine patrol saw flames coming from the house about 2 a.m., said Granite Falls Fire Chief Thomas Laws. The fire was contained to the kitchen and porch, but the heat also damaged some vinyl siding on a nearby house. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Rhonda Phillips, who lives two doors down, said she lived in the house until about three weeks ago with her three children, ages 19, 15 and 12.

"I'm just glad we weren't in there when it happened," she said.

Phillips, 37, said that just before Christmas someone set fire to a wreath that was mounted on the porch.
