A 10-year-old boy drowned in a family pool Wednesday afternoon near Granite Falls.

The boy was found about 4 p.m. in an above-ground swimming pool behind the house at 4578 Miller Court, east of U.S. 321 and near Granada Farms.

A medical examiner determined the boy had suffered a seizure prior to drowning, said LouAnn Kincaid, Caldwell County public information officer. No other details about what happened were immediately available.

The boy, who neighbors said was named Marcus, was just shy of his 11th birthday.

The boy lived at the house with his mother, Amanda Ward, stepfather, Robert Ward, and grandmother Stephanie Smith, neighbor Angel Minton said.

The family had put the pool up about two years ago and had recently opened it for the summer, Minton said.

After the ambulance drove away from the house under an overcast sky, neighbors were left to linger on their porches, watching a Caldwell County sheriff's deputy stretch yellow tape up around the house as investigators and a minister went about their jobs.
