Wreck knocks out power to 1,300
A wreck Thursday morning injured only the driver but left thousands without electricity for several hours.
Just before 6:30 a.m., William Hoyle, 54, of Joshua Trail in Lenoir was driving a 1995 Toyota sedan 50 to 55 miles per hour going east on Calico Road when we drove off the right side of the road at the intersection of Smokey Creek Road and struck a utility pole, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Troy Stutts said. Nearly 1,380 Duke Energy customers lost power, which was restored by 10:30 a.m., a Duke Energy spokesperson said.
Hoyle was taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital with injuries that Stutts described as not life-threatening. No other information about his condition was available.
Hoyle was charged with exceeding safe speed. The speed limit on Calico Road is 45 mph, Stutts said.
