New recycling service coming to Sawmills

Starting Wednesday, new recycling bins will begin to arrive all over Sawmills.

In an effort to improve recycling services for residents, the town partnered with Republic Services, which will place the blue bins in front of residents’ homes Wednesday and Thursday. The new service allows more kinds of materials to be recycled, including cardboard and more plastic items, Town Administer Seth Eckard said.

"We are making recycling in Sawmills as easy as it can be," Eckard said. "When you look at other communities who have transitioned to this new service, you generally find the amount of tonnage your community recycles going up by more than 20 percent."

With more waste being recycled, the town will save on what it pays for garbage to be hauled to the landfill. The new bins, or carts, are also 96 gallons, significantly larger than the current 18-gallon bins.

Packets inside the delivered bins will inform residents which collection route they belong to. One route will begin on July 3, and the second will begin on July 10. Each route will have collection every two weeks. The last pick-up for recycling with the current schedule will be this coming Monday and Tuesday.

Residents can keep the current red bins or put them in the new blue bins to be recycled. If you do not receive a blue bin, contact Town Hall at 828-396-7903.
