School board shuffles principals

Caldwell County Schools will see a game of musical chairs involving a few of their principals.

At Monday’s Board of Education work session, the board unanimously approved the appointment of Chris Ackerman as the new principal of Oak Hill School. Ackerman has worked as an assistant principal at South Caldwell High School since July 2007. Previously, he has worked in the Gaston County Schools system as an assistant principal at a high school and an elementary school. He came to Caldwell County in 2004 as the principal of West Lenoir Elementary School.

Jeff Link, principal of West Caldwell High School, requested to be transferred, which was approved, though no new assignment was made on Monday.

Andy Puhl, principal of Hudson Elementary School, was appointed to take over as principal at West Caldwell. Before working at Hudson Elementary, Puhl served as the principal of Happy Valley School and as a South Caldwell High School assistant principal.

Also Monday, the school board approved an interim budget to allow Caldwell County Schools to continue paying salaries and other expenses until the state adopts its budget. Monday was the end of fiscal 2013-14, but the General Assembly has not yet approved budget adjustments for fiscal 2014-15, which starts today, so school officials can't be certain exactly how much revenue they will be getting from the state. Superintendent Steve Stone estimated that budget may not be approved until mid- or late July.

Finance Officer David Johnson announced the school system’s total budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year as $118.8 million.
