Bicyclist hurt in crash out of hospital
A Lenoir man who was hospitalized after hitting a block wall Thursday afternoon while riding a bicycle is recovering at home after being released Sunday from Carolinas Medical Center.
Benny Lee Mahan, 48, of 523 Hill St. was riding down the hill on Wheeler Street on his bicycle about 4:45 p.m. and was not able to negotiate a left-hand turn onto Willow Street, wrecking the bike. Mahan was thrown into a block wall and landed in a 3-feet-deep drainage ditch. Mahan, also known as Benny Lee Hood by friends, was taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital and then flown to Carolinas Medical Center. Shakera Dula, daughter of Mahan's girlfriend, Karen Dula, said Friday afternoon that Mahan was in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Mahan was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Mahan is wearing a neck brace and complains of soreness. The bicycle, which is his only means of transportation, needs some repairs.
"The brakes need some work," he said Tuesday.
