April Cheri Childers convicted of murder
A former Granite Falls woman was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder in relation to a wreck in Hickory in April 2012 that killed a man.
Hickory police said that on April 13, 2012, April Cheri Childers, 37, was driving north on Eighth Avenue Drive S.E. about 3:15 p.m., crossed the center line and collided head-on with a car driven by Ashley Shane Britt, 32, of Hickory. Britt died. Childers and a passenger in her car were seriously injured but recovered.
Childers was determined to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the wreck.
Childers address at the time was in Granite Falls, but her current address is listed in police records as 5344 Moody Lane in Connelly Springs.
In addition to the murder charge, Childers was convicted in Catawba Superior Court of aggravated felony serious injury by motor vehicle. She was sentenced to 14 years two months to 18 years in prison.
Childers previously had been convicted of driving while impaired in May 1997 in Burke County, July 2003 in Caldwell County and May 2006 in Catawba County.
