Granite Falls Middle students accepted into All-State Honors Band
Two Granite Falls Middle School have won spots in the North Carolina All State Honors Band and will perform May 2-4 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the other selected students.
Eighth-grader Lindsey Farr began playing the clarinet in the sixth grade. She said she chose the instrument because her favorite character from “Spongebob Squarepants,” Squidward, played the clarinet. Farr plans to keep playing throughout high school and possibly in college. She wants to be a pediatric dentist after college.
Justin Faulkner, in the eighth grade, will play first chair for the snare drums in the All State Honors Band. He began playing at age 5 because his dad played drums.
The auditions for the All State Honors Band took place March 8 at Brown Middle School in Davidson County. All six school districts of North Carolina sent students to audition. Along with Farr, 36 clarinets auditioned, and 12 snare drummers tried out with Faulkner. Both students said the competition was intense.
“It was really tough,” Farr said. “You’re standing outside and you can hear the other people going on before you.”
Band teacher Sarah Stafford said, “It can be really intimidating for the students because you’re up against everyone else who is the best in their districts.”
Faulkner found a way to keep himself calm and collected before the big moment.
“I just played the whole time. I ignored everybody and just played on my practice pad,” Faulkner said.
