A Taylorsville man died Tuesday after his pickup truck struck a dump truck in Alexander County.

William Eric Shook, 41, of 915 Alspauth Dam Road was driving east on U.S. 64 about 3 p.m. when his 2002 Ford Ranger pickup crossed the center line and struck a 1998 Peterbilt dump truck driven by Allen Merrell, 48, of Morganton, the Taylorsville Times reported. Shook died at the scene.

The N.C. Highway Patrol could not be reached, and no other details of the accident or what might have caused it were available.

Shook had been working for Lenoir's Sanitation Department for the past four months, City Manager Lane Bailey said. He was on his way home from work at the time of the accident.

"He was very well liked," Beck said. "He was just getting into the groove of his job as a sanitation driver. He had so many characteristics we look for. I told our sanitation employees what happened today. It has been a very somber day."

Shook raised beef cattle and chickens, and was a volunteer fireman," Beck added.
