Wet but calm before the storm

A winter storm packing strong winds began causing problems across western North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon. Though it brought Caldwell County only light rain until Wednesday evening, shortly after 7 p.m. Caldwell emergency services reported that both bridges crossing Johns River in Collettsville had flooded and were impassable. The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that high winds knocked down trees and brought down power lines in several counties in far western North Carolina. The winds, expected to hit Caldwell on Wednesday night, were part of the storm that has already spawned tornadoes and dangerous winds throughout the Southeast. Two deaths are being blamed on the storm. Tornado watches and wind advisories were issued Wednesday across North Carolina, as well as a winter weather advisory for the higher elevations.
