Three injured in school bus accident
At least three Whitnel Elementary students were hurt when their school bus cut a turn short and clipped a retaining wall shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.
Bus 146 turned from Dellwood Drive onto Connelly Springs Road when the right rear of the bus struck the wall. There were more than 20 students on the bus, Lenoir Assistant Fire Chief Ken Hair said. No students were taken to the hospital by ambulance, but at least two were taken by their parents.
Christopher Gibbs, a third-grader, said the impact threw him from his third-row seat and flipped him over onto his left arm. His mother, Angela Dula, said she was going to take him to Caldwell Memorial Hospital to be checked out.
Shaitwon Chapman, 8, said he hit his head when the bus hit the wall. His father, Antwon Chapman, took him to the hospital. A third student, Savannah Potts, was also taken to the hospital by her father, John Brookshire.
