Optimists drop coach arrested in drug raid
A Gamewell Optimist assistant football coach was asked to quit the same day he was arrested in a drug raid last week.
Anthony Drake Perkins, 44, of 3104 Linville Court, Lenoir, was one of four suspects arrested at his house and a nearby one in Lenoir around 5 a.m. Oct. 4. Investigators said at the time they had been getting reports of possible drug activity there since 2011. Investigators said they found a variety of drugs, including both powder and crack cocaine, and marijuana. Perkins was charged with three felonies.
Perkins coached the fifth- and sixth-grade teams.
"As soon as he was arrested we told him he could no longer coach, and was asked to not return to the premises or attend any of our youth games," Gamell Optimist President Hoss Prestwood said.
Prestwood said a service conducts criminal background checks on all volunteer coaches and assistants, and anyone with a criminal background is not allowed to participate. "He passed his background check," he said.
A check of the N.C. Division of Adult Correction showed no convictions in the state under Perkins' name.
